I slept for the rest of the day, waking only once dark had fallen. The sleep had finally settled my stomach, and it growled at me, complaining at being so empty.
I slipped out of bed, whispering to Coralie that I was off to find some food. She made a half-hearted attempt to get up, but I told her to stay put. From the looks of it, most of my year mates were just falling asleep, so it must still be evening. I didnât need company.
I made it only two steps from the tent when a shadowy figure fell into step beside me. I flinched.
âSorry, I didnât mean to scare you,â said Lucas.
I didnât reply. He hadnât scared meâhis presence was too familiar for that. But I still didnât trust myself to be alone in the dark with him.
We walked in silence between the tents until I finally spoke.
âWhat were you doing there?â
This time it was his turn not to reply. Had he been waiting for me to emerge? It must have been a long wait.
âIâm sorry I spoke to you like that back there,â he said after another pause. âWhat you did was incredible, and I should haveâ¦â He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, the dark locks falling back into perfect place afterward. âYou scared me. When I heard your composition, I fearedâ¦â
âYouâre right, it was reckless.â I spoke quietly. âIâve never been in a situation like that before. Dariela and Leila were both about to be killed. I justâ¦â I spread my arms helplessly. âI reacted. Like I always do. And then I did it again with Colonel Jennica.â
âNo one can predict how theyâll respond the first time they see battle,â he said. âThere are worse ways you could respond.â My mind flew to Lieutenant Jackson and then to Lucas himself.
âI suppose soâ¦â I thought of the way the prince had intervened to prevent our own patrol walking into what had turned out to be a trap. Somehow his responses always possessed a subtlety mine lacked.
âIâm still afraid for you, Elena,â he said.
I glanced sideways at him. Was it the darkness hiding our faces that made him so open all of a sudden?
âFor me or of me?â I asked, the memory of all those motionless bodies making me shiver.
He turned slightly, reaching out a hand that he quickly let drop.
âFor you. Always for you.â He paused while a soldier passed in the other direction. âIâve been thinking on what Colonel Jennica said. They were coming for you, Elena, Iâm sure of it. And now theyâve seen what youâre capable of. Next time theyâll bring two platoons and a dozen mages.â
âWe canât know that,â I said quickly, trying to hide the shiver that ran through me. âThey could just as easily have been after you. How long has it been since a member of the royal family was within striking distance of the front lines? Perhaps they hoped to hold you to ransom, to force your family to cede something.
